Wallpapering in Marlow by Marlow Decorators

Marlow Decorators have hung wallpaper in period hallways across central Marlow’s conservation streets, Little Marlow, and Hurley.

  • Period hallways with tall ceilings, dado rails, picture rails, and staircase returns
  • Full-room hanging in living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms
  • Lining paper as preparation for a premium painted finish on lime plaster
  • Wallpaper removal and surface preparation before rehang

Period hallways in Marlow townhouses on West Street, Spittal Street, and the High Street have tall ceilings, deep cornicing, dado rails, and picture rails with staircase returns. Long drops with consistent vertical registration are required throughout. Pattern-matching on a raked stairwell is the hardest part of any wallpapering job. The seams either hold as the paste dries or they open. Preparation is what decides which outcome you get.

Marlow Decorators are insured for every job, and the stairwell platform on a period hallway is included in the quote, not added later.

Why Choose Marlow Decorators

Period Hallway Specialists

Tall ceilings, dado rails, and raked stairwell returns in Marlow’s Georgian stock require experience that most generalist decorators do not have. We set up a working platform on the stairwell as a standard step, not an add-on.

Breathable Base as Default

On lime plaster walls, common throughout conservation-area properties, we size correctly before hanging. That is what prevents seams opening as lime plaster breathes beneath the paper.

Fully Insured

Full public liability cover on every job, including stairwell access in occupied period properties across the SL7 catchment.

Mostly Referrals

Most of our wallpapering work in central Marlow comes from word-of-mouth. A well-hung hallway is visible every time someone opens the front door. —

Wallpapering Services

### Feature Walls

A wallpapered feature wall changes the character of a room without a full repaper. Living rooms and principal bedrooms in Marlow’s riverside and village properties regularly include a chimney breast or alcove wall where a statement paper makes the most sense. Textured papers, large-repeat designs, and heavy fabric-backed papers all work well on a single feature wall where the rest of the room is painted.

We advise on paper selection at the site visit. Heavy papers, textured papers, and papers with large horizontal repeats all behave differently on the wall and require different preparation. Telling you this before the paper is ordered saves waste.

For painted statement walls and chimney-breast feature walls in a different colour or finish, see our feature wall painting page.

For painted walls adjacent to the feature paper, see our interior painting page.

Full Room Wallpapering

Full room wallpapering covers every wall, including recesses, chimney breast returns, and window embrasures. Pattern alignment across four walls, two alcoves, and one chimney breast is the technical challenge of a full room hang.

We set out the hang from the focal point of the room and work outward. The cut behind the door or in the least visible corner is where the pattern break falls, not across the fireplace.

Lining Paper

Lining paper hung horizontally before a painted finish is the correct approach on walls with minor surface imperfections, hairline cracks, or previous wallpaper removal marks. On lime plaster walls in Marlow’s conservation-area properties, a horizontally hung lining paper provides a uniform base that prevents paint absorption variation across the wall. For the underlying lime substrate science behind this approach, see our period property painting page.

We advise on lining paper weight at the site visit. Heavier lining paper bridges more surface variation than lighter grades.

Period Hallways

Period hallways in Georgian properties in central Marlow and the surrounding Bucks villages including Little Marlow and Hurley present the hardest wallpapering conditions. Tall ceilings, raked stairwells, dado rails, picture rails, and multiple door openings on the same wall all add to the complexity. A typical Georgian townhouse hallway on West Street or Spittal Street has ceilings at nine to ten feet. The stairwell return requires three or four additional long drops cut to the tread rise of each step.

Long drops on a raked stairwell must be cut precisely for each tread rise. They must be hung with consistent vertical registration from a plumb reference line at the top of the flight.

We set up a temporary platform on the stairwell for safe working access. We do not attempt raked stairwells from ladders alone. The platform is included in the quote, not an add-on. Where the staircase itself needs full strip-and-restore alongside the wallpaper, see our staircase renovation page.

Wallpaper Removal

Old wallpaper must come off cleanly before any new paper or paint is applied. Attempting to hang new paper over old usually fails within months as the old paste reactivates. We soak and strip thoroughly, then assess the plaster beneath before recommending a preparation course.

On lime plaster behind old wallpaper, we check for areas where the plaster has come away from the wall with the paper. These need to be made good before any new finish is applied.

Here’s How It Works

1. Surface assessment and preparation planning

We assess the wall condition, note lime plaster areas, identify any repairs needed, and confirm the preparation sequence. For period hallways, we confirm the stairwell platform requirement and include it in the quote.

2. Preparation

Existing wallpaper is removed and the walls are washed and dried fully. Repairs are completed and allowed to dry. A size coat is applied to seal the surface and provide the correct level of slip for the paste during hanging.

3. Setting out

We establish a true vertical line and set out the hang from the focal wall of the room. For raked stairwells, the longest drop is measured and cut first, and each subsequent drop is matched to it before going up.

4. Hanging

Paper is pasted, allowed to soak to the manufacturer’s recommendation, then hung in sequence. Seams are butted and smoothed. Recesses, corners, and architrave returns are cut cleanly. Pattern-match is checked drop by drop, not just at the start and end.

5. Final inspection

We check every seam, every corner, and every cut edge before leaving. Loose edges are pressed and sealed before the job is signed off. —

Wallpapering Costs in Marlow

Prices below are estimates only. Every room and hallway is different. Call 01628 965677 for a precise quote.

Wallpapering in Marlow properties typically runs from £250 for a single feature wall to £1,100 or more for a period hallway with a tall stairwell return. Period hallways at the upper end of that range reflect the access equipment, the long-drop preparation, and the pattern-matching complexity involved.

Paper type

Heavy or textured papers take longer to hang than standard papers. Large-repeat patterns increase waste and require more time to match across drops.

Ceiling height and access

Conservation-area townhouses in Marlow have ceiling heights of 9 to 11 feet on the principal floors. Access requirements are included in the quote but add to the project time compared to a standard ceiling height.

Surface preparation

Walls that need stripping, repairing, and sizing before any paper goes on add time before the hanging even begins. Lime plaster with previous wallpaper removal damage often needs more preparation than a modern gypsum wall.

Trade insight

The stairwell return in a townhouse on West Street or Spittal Street is the single most time-intensive element of a hallway wallpapering job. Do not be surprised if the hallway quote is higher than the bedroom or living room.
