Staircase Renovation in Marlow | Marlow Decorators

Staircase renovation by Marlow Decorators restores original timber staircases in conservation-area properties across central Marlow and the surrounding Bucks villages.
- Full staircase strip-and-restore including spindle restoration, handrail refinish, and tread restoration
- Balustrade repaint on Georgian and Victorian period staircases
- Chemical strip and heat strip methods matched to timber condition and peg joint integrity
- Conservation-area and listed-building considerations where original joinery must be retained
Original staircases in three-storey Georgian townhouses in the Marlow conservation area are among the most architecturally significant joinery in the building. Renovation requires methodical stripping, careful filling, and a primer-undercoat-topcoat sequence that restores moulding definition without obscuring it.

Why Choose Marlow Decorators
Chemical Strip Expertise
Original softwood staircases in listed and conservation-area properties cannot withstand heat-stripping that risks burning peg joints. We use chemical strip on antique softwood where heat would compromise the joinery.
Fixed Quotes for Strip-and-Restore
A full restoration covering spindles, handrails, treads, and string boards is priced from a single site visit. No unexpected additions after we start work.
Fully Insured
Full public liability cover on every job, including occupied properties in the SL7 catchment.
Mostly Referrals
Most of our staircase restoration work in central Marlow comes from word-of-mouth. Neighbours see the completed work and call.
Staircase Renovation Services
We cover full strip-and-restore on period staircases, spindle restoration, handrail and newel post refinish, tread and riser restoration, and balustrade repaint.
Full Strip-and-Restore on Period Staircases
Georgian townhouses on West Street carry original timber staircases with turned spindles, shaped newel posts, and panelled string boards. Two centuries of accumulated paint obscures the turned detail. The only way to restore that profile is to strip the timber back, fill any defects, and reprime before the topcoat sequence.
Heat stripping on antique softwood risks burning the peg joints that hold the spindle into the handrail. Chemical strip is the safer method where timber integrity matters.
Spindle Restoration
Turned spindles are where paint build-up is worst. Two centuries of redecoration cycles can obscure the turned profile to the point where the spindle reads as a plain post. Chemical strip removes the layers without burning the softwood beneath.
Where peg joints are visible at the top and bottom of each spindle, we avoid heat strip methods entirely. The joint is structural; charring it for faster stripping is not a trade-off we make.
Handrail and Newel Post Refinish
Original handrails on Georgian staircases are typically hardwood with a clear varnish or painted finish. Restoring the handrail means stripping back any failed coatings, sanding with the grain, filling defects, and applying either a clear or painted finish. Newel posts carry shaped profiles at the cap and base — we strip, fill, and reprime to restore the definition before the topcoat.
Tread and Riser Restoration
Treads on a three-storey staircase carry decades of foot traffic. Original softwood treads in conservation-area townhouses often show wear at the nosing and central tread area. We fill defects, sand to smooth, and apply undercoat and topcoat in sequence. Where treads are carpeted, we coordinate with carpet removal and refitting.
Balustrade and String Board Repaint
The balustrade is the complete structure: spindles, handrail, newel posts, and string boards. A full balustrade repaint covers every element. Original panelled string boards in Georgian properties are often obscured by accumulated paint. Stripping and repriming restores the panel definition. Here’s How It Works
1. Site visit and staircase assessment
We visit and assess the staircase in full. We note timber type, peg joint visibility, paint accumulation at spindles and newel posts, tread condition, and any defects. We confirm chemical or heat strip method at this stage.
2. Strip-back phase
Chemical strip is applied to spindles, newel posts, and string boards. The stripper is left to work, then removed with scrapers and neutralising wash. Heat strip is used on hardwood where appropriate. This phase is the most time-intensive.
3. Fill and sand
All defects are filled. Spindles are sanded to smooth at the turned profiles. Handrails are sanded with the grain. Treads are sanded flat. This stage determines the final surface quality.
4. Prime, undercoat, topcoat sequence
Primer goes on first, sealing the timber. Undercoat follows. Topcoat is the final finish. Each coat gets adequate drying time. We do not rush the sequence.
5. Final inspection
We inspect all surfaces in good light before the walkthrough. Touch-ups are completed on site. We walk through the completed staircase with you before we leave.
Staircase Renovation Costs in Marlow
The figures below are starting ranges. Call 01628 965677 for a precise quote.
Full staircase strip-and-restore on a three-storey Georgian townhouse in the Marlow conservation area: £3,500 to £7,000. Two-storey period cottages in Little Marlow or Frieth: £2,500 to £4,000. For straightforward repaints without stripping, see our interior painting page.

Staircase height and flight count
A three-storey Georgian townhouse has two full flights and two landings. More flights means more spindles, more treads, and more time.
Paint accumulation
Staircases with two centuries of accumulated paint require more intensive stripping than staircases redecorated within the last decade. The strip-back phase is the largest variable in pricing.
Timber condition
Staircases with defects at spindle bases, split treads, or damaged string boards require more fill and repair work before the paint sequence begins.
