Why Choose Marlow Decorators

Breathable Coating Specialists

Lime render and conservation-area elevations in Marlow need the right coating from the start. We specify the correct product for each surface before any brush goes on.

Conservation-Area Familiarity

We work regularly on West Street and Spittal Street properties. Finish quality there is judged against the surrounding architecture. On exteriors, applicable conservation constraints apply and we know them.

Fully Insured

Full public liability cover on every job, including scaffolded access on taller Edwardian villas.

Mostly Referrals

Most of our exterior work in the SL7 catchment comes from repeat clients and neighbours. A finish that holds for eight to ten years is the best recommendation. —

### Masonry and Rendered Walls

Period properties in the Marlow conservation area carry lime-based render on their elevations. Standard film-forming masonry paint traps moisture within the wall. It causes delamination within two to three seasons in Marlow’s Thames Valley climate. Breathable masonry coatings, correctly primed for lime render, are the only option that holds. For the underlying substrate science on listed buildings and lime-mortar pointing, see our period property painting page.

Before any coating goes on, we check for structural cracks, hollow render sections, and areas where the existing coating has lifted or failed. Loose render is cut back and made good. Cracks are filled with a flexible exterior filler matched to the surface. The primer is selected for the surface type before the finish coats are applied.

For a detailed breakdown of masonry-only projects, see our masonry painting page.

Sash Windows and Timber Joinery

Sash windows are standard on conservation-area townhouses and on Edwardian villas along the riverside streets. The sash boxes, staff beads, and parting beads accumulate paint over decades, causing sashes to bind. Correct preparation includes working paint back from the bead channels and running each sash through its full travel before refinishing.

We strip back to sound timber, patch any rot, prime with a specialist exterior timber primer, and apply durable exterior gloss or satin. Every sash is checked to open and close freely after the paint has cured. For a full breakdown, see our window frame painting page.

Fascias, Soffits, and Gutters

Fascias and soffits protect the roof line from weather penetration. We repaint timber fascias where they are sound and advise on replacement where the timber has deteriorated beyond a paintable condition. On period properties in Marlow, timber fascias are common and often worth retaining if preparation is done correctly.

We inspect and advise on condition at the site visit before recommending a course of action.

Front Door and Porch

Conservation-area terraces on West Street and Spittal Street have original timber front doors within an architecturally watched streetscape. Paint build-up on panel edges and moulded profiles causes loss of crispness that reads poorly against the quality of the surrounding architecture. We strip back, fill, prime, and apply durable exterior finish to achieve a clean result. Colour consultation for conservation-area properties is included at the quotation stage.

For a full breakdown of front door projects, see our front door painting page.

Riverside and Thames-Bank Elevations

Properties on Thames-bank streets in Riverside Marlow, and riverside plots in Hurley and Medmenham, face persistently higher ambient moisture from the river corridor. Standard coatings fail early on these elevations. Breathable systems are the required choice on all riverside stock, and we specify accordingly on every riverside project we take on.

Garden Walls and Outbuildings

Brick boundary walls, gate piers, and rendered outbuildings need the same assessment and preparation as the main house. Larger detached plots in Marlow Bottom and riverside properties in Hurley often have substantial garden buildings and boundary walls within scope. We include outbuilding assessment in all exterior quotes where they are present. For garden fencing and shed painting, see our fence painting and shed painting pages.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site assessment

We visit and inspect every surface. We note render type, existing coating condition, timber condition, biological growth, and any structural repair needed before painting can begin.

2. Repairs and surface preparation

Render is repaired where hollow or cracked. Timber is stripped back to sound material. Biological growth on shaded or riverside elevations is treated with a fungicidal solution and allowed adequate dwell time before rinsing and drying.

3. Primer selection

Lime render gets a breathable masonry primer. Standard sand-and-cement render gets a penetrating masonry primer. Bare timber gets a specialist exterior timber primer. The primer decision is made surface by surface, not one product across everything.

4. Paint application

Exterior coatings need dry conditions and temperatures above 5 degrees Celsius to cure correctly. We plan application phases around the forecast and do not coat ahead of rain. Two finish coats are standard. Thames-bank and north-facing elevations with persistent damp exposure get a third coat where the specification calls for it.

5. Inspection and sign-off

Once the final coat has cured, we inspect all surfaces in clear daylight. Touch-ups are completed before we leave. We walk through the finished work with you before closing the job. —

Exterior Painting Costs in Marlow

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01628 965677 for a precise quote.

Exterior painting in Marlow typically costs between £2,200 and £9,000 depending on property size, surface type, and scope. Conservation-area properties with lime render and extensive original timber joinery sit at the higher end.

Surface area and access

A large Edwardian villa in Riverside Marlow has considerably more wall and joinery area than a 1960s detached in Marlow Bottom. Taller properties with complex rooflines need access equipment, which is included in the quote.

Coating choice

Breathable masonry coatings for lime render cost more per litre than standard masonry paint. The service life on riverside and conservation-area properties justifies the difference. We specify the right product and include the cost in the quote.

Timber condition

Sash windows and original joinery on period properties often need stripping and repairs before painting. The preparation stage on a set of six sash windows takes considerably longer than painting new softwood windows.

Trade insight

Marlow’s conservation-area properties carry a high proportion of original sash windows and lime-rendered elevations. A thorough preparation stage on these surfaces is what separates a finish that lasts eight to ten years from one that fails within two.
