Why Choose Marlow Decorators

Period Hall Sequencing

Ceiling, cornice, walls, and woodwork must be applied in the correct order in a tall period hallway. Cutting in at a high cornice and returning to the walls prevents runs on the finished profile. Your decorator works to that sequence and do not skip stages to save time.

Tall Stairwell Access

Multi-storey stairwells in period semis need an access platform, not a single ladder at its limit. Your decorator schedules access platform time into the job and includes it in the quote. It is not an add-on.

Cornice and Coving Care

Original plaster cornices on tall period hallways are fragile at the leading edge. Your decorator brushes in gently at cornices, never rolls directly onto profiled plasterwork, and checks for delamination before any topcoat.

Fully Insured

Your decorator carries public liability cover for every project. Your decorator carries public liability cover, and the access platform for a period stairwell is included in the quote.

Hallway Painting Services

Marlow Decorators covers period hall sequencing, stairwell-access scheduling, cornice and coving preservation, high-traffic finishes, and dado rail coordination. For adjacent staircase work, see our interior painting page.

Period Hallway Sequencing

Tall Georgian entrance halls have ceiling heights of twelve to fourteen feet on the principal floor. Painting a hallway of this height requires a ceiling-cornice-walls-woodwork sequence, not a one-step rollered approach. The cornice profile must be cut in from above before the wall coat is applied, or the wall colour bleeds onto the lower profile edge.

Period plaster on the walls may be original lime render beneath a skim. Lime plaster breathes, moves slightly with the seasons, and requires a breathable paint system. Your decorator assesses the substrate at the site visit. For staircase decorating, see our staircase painting page.

Stairwell-Access Scheduling

Multi-day hallway and stairwell jobs in Marlow’s period semis and older townhouses need platform access to reach the upper stairwell walls and the soffit above the stair flight. Your decorator schedules the access platform into the programme and includes it in the quotation. Access is planned so the staircase remains usable between working days where possible. The job does not overrun because of a missed platform hire.

Cornice and Coving Preservation

Original plaster cornices on tall period hallways are moulded in situ and cannot be replaced like a modern MDF coving section. The leading edge of an original cornice is fragile, and accumulated paint can obscure the run-and-moulded profile. Your decorator strips back paint build-up at the leading edge where it has obscured the original profile, primes correctly, and cuts in carefully without rolling directly onto the plasterwork.

High-Traffic Corridor Finishes

A hallway takes more daily contact than any other room in the house. Door handles, bags, and coats abrade the wall surface close to the dado height. Your decorator recommends a higher-sheen finish in satin or eggshell rather than a flat matt for hallway walls, which allows cleaning without burnishing the paint film. Skirtings and architraves in hallways take a scrubbable gloss finish. For wall pattern and texture work, see our wallpapering page.

Dado Rail and Woodwork Coordination

Many period hallways in Marlow’s conservation area have original dado rails and picture rails. These are treated as part of the woodwork phase, not the wall phase. Your decorator masks or removes switchplates and door furniture before painting and replaces them after the final coat has cured. Colour coordination between the woodwork, dado, and wall zones is discussed at the site visit.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site visit and hallway assessment

Your decorator visits and notes ceiling height, stairwell access requirements, substrate condition on the walls, the presence of a dado rail or picture rail, and any delamination at the cornice. Access platform scheduling is confirmed at this stage.

2. Surface preparation

Filling and spot-priming hairline cracks in period plaster. Abrading glosswork on skirting and architraves. Checking the cornice leading edge for paint build-up. A period hallway typically needs more preparation time than a modern property.

3. Platform setup and ceiling phase

The access platform is positioned and the ceiling is applied first. Cornice profiles are cut in from above before any wall coat goes on. The ceiling phase is completed and dry before the walls begin.

4. Walls, dado, and cornice cutting-in

Walls are applied in the correct sequence, top of the wall first, working down to the dado. Cornices are cut in carefully by hand brush. Your decorator does not roll directly onto profiled plasterwork. The dado rail receives its woodwork coat during this phase.

5. Woodwork and final inspection

Skirtings, architraves, and door frames receive the gloss or eggshell finish. Door furniture and switchplates are replaced. The completed job is inspected in good daylight before your decorator leaves the site.

Hallway painting cost detail in Marlow by Marlow Decorators

Ceiling height and stairwell complexity

A fourteen-foot Georgian entrance hall with a full-height stairwell costs more than a standard period semi hallway. Platform setup, the extra cornice run, and additional wall area all extend the programme and the price.

Substrate and plaster condition

Original lime plaster with hairline cracking, soft spots, or delaminating cornice sections needs more preparation than a modern skim-coat surface. The preparation phase is the largest variable in hallway painting costs in Marlow.

Finish system and number of coats

A flat matt on the walls with oil-based gloss on the woodwork is the standard scope. A specialist limewash, a tinted eggshell, or a high-build primer beneath the topcoat add cost and time to the programme.
